RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS GRANTS AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR THE NATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, FY22 MIDDLE MILE GRANT.

WHEREAS, applications are now being accepted for the FY22 Middle Mile Grant; and
WHEREAS, The City of Jonesboro, Arkansas needs to improve the community’s broadband infrastructure to strengthen internet connectivity, as it is recognized as a necessary tool for success; and
WHEREAS, The City of Jonesboro, Arkansas and community partners will come together to collaborate and submit an application for the Middle Mile Grant Program; and
WHEREAS, the partners would agree to enter into a collaborative agreement, in which, the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas will be the lead agency and named applicant and the other parties would be listed as partners in the Middle Mile Grant application; and
WHEREAS, the collaborative partners will use the funding for the construction, improvement, or acquisition of broadband infrastructure. The purpose of the grant program is to expand and extend internet infrastructure to reduce the cost of connecting areas that are unserved or underserved to the internet; and
WHEREAS, the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas and community partners are requesting $14,000,000 in federal funds, in which, the City of Jonesboro and community partners will be contributing to the 30% local match of $6,000,000 for a total project cost of $20,000,000.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS THAT:
SECTION 1: The City of Jonesboro, Arkansas supports the submission of the FY22 Middle Mile Grant application to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, for the construction and expansion of Jonesboro’s broadband infrastructure.
