RESOLUTION TO RE-NAME THE CHURCH STREET COMMUNITY CENTER TO EARL BELL COMMUNITY CENTER FOR MR. BELL’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

WHEREAS, Olympian Earl Bell is a citizen of the City of Jonesboro and has maintained this as his permanent residence throughout his athletic career, which has taken him around the world, and

 

WHEREAS, Earl Bell’s athletic skills lead him to be the first American to clear 19 feet in the pole vault outdoors and was the first 19 year old ever to pole vault 18 feet, and

 

WHERAS, while competing as a collegian at Arkansas State University, he was five times the National Collegiate Athletic Association Champion, winning the indoors National Championship in 1975 and 76, 77 and

 

WHEREAS, he won the 1974 National Junior Olympic Championships and the Gold Medal at the Pan American Games in 1975 and set the world record in 1976, and honor which he held for 24 days, and placed 6th in the XXI 01 Olympiad at Montreal in 1976 and was the American record holder in 1976, and

 

WHEREAS, he was ranked number one in the world in 1977, and

 

WHEREAS. Earl Bell’s latest triumph was the Bronze Medal in the XXIII Olympiad at Los Angeles, 1984, and

 

WHEREAS, all of these accomplishments have not only brought fame to Earl Bell, but also to his home town, Jonesboro, Arkansas

 

BE IT THEREFORE ORDAINED that the Church Street Community Center be renamed the Earl Bell Community Center in honor of the athletic accomplishments, so the facility will be a reminder and inspiration to all young people.

 

PASSED and ADOPTED this 15th day of October, 1984.
