METROPOLITAN AREA PLANNING COMMISSION
JULY 18, 1994
body
MEMBERS PRESENT: Phillips, McCracken, Beadles, Finley, Coleman, Damron
MEMBERS ABSENT: Shaw, Little
#1 SP94-15 Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. requested approval of revised plans for the Sam’s Wholesale Club site. The revision concerns the exterior of the building and a proposal to change it from a block exterior to a metal/block exterior. The property is located on the west side of Caraway Road, north of Race Street.
At the July 12, 1994, meeting of the MAPC the decision ended in a tie vote, 3 to 3 with two abstaining. In a letter received from Wal-Mart, company officials stated that they felt that a consensus had not reached either for or against their proposal. They further stated they felt the tie vote was not an appealable decision since the motion concerning the request was in the negative.
Architects for the project stated that they will not be using a typical, ribbed, metal building. Instead the building will consist of block approximately four feet in height and then they will be using a Stylwall II Flat Wall System for the remaining coverage. There will be no outside connections visible and no ribs. The colors will be blue and gray similar to the local supercenter not the typical browns that have been used in the past in other locations.
The Planning Commissioners stated they wished they had had this information at the previous meeting. Information provided at that time did not include details on the proposed metal building. Several of the Commissioners stated they were familiar with the architectural panels being used in this application.
Mr. Phillips made a motion to approve the request to change from a masonry product to an architectural panel as described. The motion was seconded by Mr. Damron. Voting was 3 in favor, 1 opposed and 1 abstaining, REQUEST APPROVED.
