RESOLUTION TO OPPOSE THE DISMANTLING OF THE ESSENTIAL AIR SERVICE SUBSIDY FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
body
WHEREAS, over the years the City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas, has supported commercial air service and the development of the Jonesboro Municipal Airport; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas recognizes the importance of the effect of efficient, commercial air transportation of people and goods, which is in the best economic interest of our state as a whole; and
WHEREAS, the duly constituted Aviation Committee of the Chamber has studied the situation with regard to proposals to do away with essential air service funding for Jonesboro as it is now constituted; and Nestle’ USA Prepared Food Division, located at 8203 E. Highland Drive Jonesboro, Arkansas, has sought to participate in the program and more specifically has requested benefits accruing from construction of new facility; and
WHEREAS, the loss of the essential air service subsidy would probably lead to the abandonment of the current commercial commuter service to our area; and
WHEREAS, as a result of losing the Essential Air Service Subsidy, the business and industry and the general public of Northeast Arkansas would suffer the inconvenience and expense of ground travel to a commercial air terminal in another state; and
WHEREAS, the community’s ability to recruit industries such as Frito-Lay, Nestle’, Haworth, and Post Cereals, was predicated on the availability of commercial air service from Jonesboro to the Dallas/Ft. Worth gateway.
BE IT THEREFORE, RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas, after careful and thoughtful consideration, and on the advice of the Aviation Committee, respectfully adopt this resolution of opposition to the dismantling of the Essential Air Service Subsidy from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
