CALLED MEETING - JUNE 30, 1986

The Jonesboro City Council met at 5:00 p.m. Present were Mayor, City Clerk, City Attorney, and Aldermen Park, Stricklin, Hinson, Evans, Bridger, Strauser, Sanderson, Culpepper, Mays and Nix. Aldermen Shelton and Hannah were absent.

Mr. Herbert Davis, director of Finance and Administration addressed the allocation of funds if the county-wide one cent sales tax is approved by voters on August 5th. He stated that the city would need almost every dollar of the tax revenues just to maintain existing services. The City of Jonesboro faces a projected deficit of $661,710 in 1987 without new revenues. The County-wide sales tax would raise an estimated $3.18 million annually, and Jonesboro would receive $1.58 million, but has pledged 55% of all sales tax revenues for the first two years for a solid waste system. This would leave an estimated $713,965 to apply to any deficit.

Mr. Sanderson offered the following resolution:

RESOLUTION TO PROPOSE HOW TO USE THE REVENUE FROM THE ONE CENT SALES TAX

Mr. Sanderson moved, seconded by Mr. Stricklin to adopt the resolution. All voted aye. The resolution was given the number 1986:17.

The Mayor distributed information regarding the emergency phone system, E-911 at the request of Betty Nell McDaniel. He asked them to review it prior to the regular meeting on July 7, 1986. He stated that the City Clerk had attended a meeting regarding the program at the Municipal League and she would be available to answer any questions regarding the program. Mr. Sanderson stated that the city cannot afford such a program and offered to speak with Mrs. McDaniel.

Mr. Mays moved, seconded by Mr. Stricklin for the Council to grant permission to waive bids and purchase one lawn mower for the mowing of the cemetery, to replace a stolen one. He stated the insurance company would pay a large portion of the purchase. All voted aye.
