A RESOLUTION NAMING THE JONESBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT FIRING RANGE “The Wayne Dowdy Memorial Police Firing Range”

body

WHEREAS, in the mid-1970’s Wayne Dowdy, seeing the need for a permanent site at which officers could safely qualify under firearms standards set forth by the State of Arkansas, persuaded city leaders to donate property for a firing range facility on the grounds of Craighead Forest Park. Wayne Dowdy further secured donations of materials and labor from within the community and worked with the United States Customs Service in obtaining funds to assist in the costs of constructing a classroom building on site.

WHEREAS, Wayne Dowdy, whose employment with the Jonesboro Police Department began on April 15, 1966, spent endless hours of his own time to bring about a successful conclusion to the establishment of the Jonesboro Police Department Firing Range and became the first Jonesboro Police Department Firing Range Officer remaining in that position until his retirement on July 18, 1986.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS:

The City of Jonesboro hereby dedicates the facility now known as the Jonesboro Police Department Firing Range to the memory of Captain Wayne Dowdy and hereby names the facility THE WAYNE DOWDY MEMORIAL POLICING FIRING RANGE.

PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 4TH Day of October, 2005.
