AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING AND ELIMINATING STOP AND YIELD SIGNS AT CERTAIN STREET INTERSECTIONS IN THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS; PROVIDING A PENALTY FOR VIOLATION THEREOF, AND FURTHER PURPOSES

BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas:

 

Section 1: It shall hereafter be unlawful to drive any vehicle into the intersections of the following named streets and avenues in the City of Jonesboro without first bringing such vehicle to a full and complete stop; and stop signs are hereby placed and established a the following designated points:

 

(1)                     A stop sign on the east side of Vine Street 10 feet south of the south line of Washington Avenue, and on the west side of Vine Street 10 feet north line of Washington Avenue.

(2)                     Stop sign on the east side of Vine Street 10 feet south of the south line of Jefferson Avenue, and on the west side of Vine Street 10 feet north of the north line of Jefferson Avenue.

(3)                     A stop sign on the east side of Nesbitt Street 10 feet south of the south line of Washington Avenue, and on the west side of Nesbitt Street 10 feet north of the north line of Washington Avenue.

(4)                     A stop sign on the east side of Flint Street 10 feet south of the south line of College Avenue, and on the west side of Flint Street 10 feet north of the north line of College Avenue.

(5)                     A stop sign on the south side of Manila Street 10 feet west of the west line of Boydston Street, and on the north side of Manila Street 10feet east of the east line of Boydston Street.

(6)                     A stop sign, on the south side of Manila Street 10 feet west of the west side of Court Street, and on the north side of Manila Street 10 feet east of the east line of Court Street.

(7)                     A stop sign on the north side of East Race Street 10 feet east of the east line of Willow Road.

(8)                     A stop sign on the south side of Race Street 10 feet west of the west line of Court Street, and on the north side of Race Street 10 feet east of the east line of Court Street.

(9)                     A stop sign on the south side of School Street 10 feet west of the west line of Clark Street, and on the north side of School Street 10 feet east of the east line of Clark Street.

(10)                     A stop sign, on the south side of Henry Street 10 feet west of the east side of Arch Street.

(11)                     A stop sign, on the east side of James Street 10 feet south of the south line of Rosemond Avenue, and on the west side of James Street 10 feet north of the north line of Rosemond Avenue.

(12)                     A stop sign, on the north side of Rosemond Avenue 10 feet east of the east line of James Street, and on the south side of Rosemond Avenue 10 feet west of the west line of James Street.

(13)                     A stop sign, on the east side of Drake Street 10 feet south of the south line of Hoover Avenue, and on the west side of Drake Street 10 feet north of the north line of Hoover Avenue.

(14)                      A stop sign, on the west side of Main Street, 10 feet north of the north line of Forrest Avenue.

 

Section 2: All persons, firms or corporations operating vehicles upon eh streets and avenues above described shall bring such vehicles to a complete stop at any distance not less than ten feet from said intersection so marked by stop signs, nor more than 25 feet from said intersection.

 

Section 3: It shall be unlawful to drive any vehicle into the intersection of the following named streets and avenues in the City of Jonesboro without first bringing such vehicle to a full and complete stop, if required for safety; and yield signs are hereby placed and established at the following designated points:

 

(1)                     On the west side of Holly Street 10 feet north of the north line of West Nettleton Road.

(2)                     On the south side of Thomas Avenue 10 feet west of the west line of Flint Street, and on the north side of Thomas Avenue 10 feet east of the east line of Flint Street.

(3)                     On the west side of Brookhaven Street 10 feet south of West Nettleton Avenue.

(4)                     A sign on the east side of Olive Street 10 feet south of the south line of Washington Avenue, and on the west side of Olive Street 10 feet north of the north line of Washington Avenue.

(5)                     A sign on the east side of Olive Street 10 feet south of the south line of Jefferson Avenue, and on the west side of Olive Street 10 feet north of the north line of Jefferson Avenue.

(6)                     

Section 4: All persons, firms or corporations operating vehicles upon the streets and avenues described in Section 3 above shall, if required for safety, stop such vehicles at any distance not less than ten feet from said intersection so marked by yield signs nor more than 25 feet from said intersection.

 

Section 5: The Chief of Police or some person designated by him is hereby directed to place the stop and yield signs herein established at all points hereinabove described.

 

Section 6: Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fined in any sum not less than Five Dollars ($5.00), nor more than Fifteen Dollars ($15.00) for each offense.

 

Section 7: Section 1, Sub-sections (5) and (7) of Ordinance No.897 is hereby repealed, and all ordinances or portions thereof establishing stop signs on either side of Hoover Avenue at its intersection with Drake Street and either side of Boydston Street at its intersection with Manila Street are hereby repealed.

 

Section 8: It is hereby found by the City Council of the City of Jonesboro that the lack of traffic control signs at certain intersections within the City of Jonesboro has resulted in a number of accidents with resulting property damage and personal injuries and this Ordinance being necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health, and safety, and emergency is hereby declared to exist and this Ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage and adoption.
