CITY COUNCIL MINUTES, JANUARY 16, 1984

 

The Jonesboro City Council met in regular session, Monday, January 16, 1984, at 7:30 p.m. Present were Mayor, City Clerk, City Attorney, and all aldermen except Mr. Hinson.

 

The minutes of January 3, 1984, and January 12, 1984, were approved as mailed on motion by Mr. Shelton, seconded by Mr. Stricklin. All voted aye.

 

Mr. Stricklin offered the following resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO NAMES JUDGES, CLERKS AND ALTERNATE WORKERS FOR THE CITY WATER AND LIGHT PLANT ELECTION FOR 1984

 

Mr. Sanderson moved, seconded by Mr. Stricklin, to adopt the resolution. All voted aye. The resolution was given the number 1984:01.

 

The following ordinance was on 3rd reading: (NO PARKING - Vera St. & Dewey St.)

 

AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR CERTAIN TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES: TO PROVIDE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS THEREOF; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Mays moved, seconded by Mr. Park, to approve the ordinance. All voted aye. The ordinance was given the number 1853.

 

The following ordinance was on 3rd reading: (Russell Skeens property- Caraway Road)

 

AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDINANCE #954, KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR CHANGES IN ZONING BOUNDARIES AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Park moved, seconded by Mr. Shelton to approve the ordinance with the emergency clause. All voted aye. The ordinance was given the number 1854.

 

Mr. Nix moved, seconded by Mr. Park, to appoint Mr. Jim Hannah as Vice-Mayor for the year 1984. All voted aye.

 

Mr. Mays moved seconded by Dr. Smith to appoint Julian Miles and Wilson Cox to the Electrical Board. All voted aye.

 

Mr. John House talked with the Council about starting a bus service for Caraway Road to Arkansas State University. The Council expressed concern stopping on Caraway Road and asked that Mr. House check with the Police Department and Highway Department to see if there would be any conflict.

 

Mr. Sanderson moved, seconded by Dr. Smith, to appoint Gordon Price to the Forum Board. All voted aye.

 

Mayor Stallings noted that the Hotel-Motel Committee had two members that needed to be replaced, Mr. Haggenmacher and Mrs. Haigler. Mr. Stricklin moved, seconded by Mr. Nix, to appoint Mr. Hannah and Mr. Bridger to the board. All voted aye.

 

Concerning the Nora Hopkins suit, Mr. Park moved, seconded by Mr. Shelton, that the fees from the Attorneys were too high and that the judge be allowed to set the fees for the case. All voted aye except Mr. Hannah, Mr. Blevins, Mr. Sanderson, Mr. Province, and Mr. Nix. Motion passed 6-5.

 

There being no further business, council adjourned.
