RESOLUTION TO REQUEST THE REMOVAL OF THE MEDIAN ON STADIUM BLVD IN ORDER TO MAKE A FIFTH LANE OF TRAFFIC

WHEREAS, over ninety-five percent of the property owners along Stadium Boulevard, Aka/ U.S. Highway 49, between Stallings Lane and Phillips Drive and over 1,000 residents of the City of Jonesboro and Northeast Arkansas signed petitions asking the City Council of Jonesboro, Arkansas to recommend the removal of the median on Stadium Boulevard between Stallings Lane and U.S. Highway 63 and the addition of a fifth lane in its place; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of Jonesboro, Arkansas, has determined that the median located on Stadium Boulevard, Aka/ U.S. Highway 49, should be removed from its present location commencing at its Southerly Location and going in a Northerly Direction to a point thirty (30) feet South of Stallings Lane; and,
WHEREAS, it is recommended to the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department that upon removal of the median as set forth above, that a fifth lane be installed in substitution of the median; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that removal of the median and substitution of the median with a fifth lane will enhance safety and economic development, and will not deter traffic flow; and,
WHEREAS, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department has previously completed similar median removal projects in the incorporated Cities of Springdale, Fort Smith, and Van Buren in which the municipalities provided additional right of way and utility relocation, where needed, and the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department provided state and federal funds for construction;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of Jonesboro, Arkansas that it recommends to the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department that the median located on Stadium Boulevard; Aka/ U.S. Highway 49, be removed from its present location commencing at its Southerly Location and going in a Northerly Direction to thirty (30) feet South of Stallings Lane and that upon removal of the median that a fifth traffic lane be installed as soon as reasonably possible.
