Minutes for the City Council meeting on June 20, 1955

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas met in regular session on the above named date in the City Hall at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Clerk, City Attorney and the following named Councilmen: Powell, Hamilton, Stricklin, Snow, Copeland, Hart, Hendrix and Johnson. Absent: Fritz.

 

Mr. Stricklin made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the permit be granted to the Jonesboro Motor Court to build an additional 3 units to the present Court. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried, Permit granted.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Powell, that A.L. Hendrix Motors, Inc. be granted a permit to build a Body Shop and Upholstering shop, corner of Bridge and Washington. Roll was called. All voting aye. Motion carried, Permit granted.

 

Mr. Stricklin offered the following Resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO ADOPT THE CITY MASTER STREET PLAN

 

Mr. Snow then made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the Resolution be adopted as read. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1955:16.

 

Mr. Snow offered the following Ordinance:

 

AN ORDINANCE PRESCRIBING THE LOCATION OF BUILDINGS HEREAFTER ERECTED, CONSTRUCTED, RECONSTRUCTED OR ALTERED ALONG THE STREETS OF THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS.

 

After the Ordinance was read for the first time, Mr. Hendrix made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the rules be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye, motion carried. The Ordinance was then read for the second time. After which, Mr. Hamilton made the motion that the rules be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. All aye, motion carried. Mr. Hendrix then made the motion, seconded by Mr. Stricklin, that the Ordinance be adopted as read. Roll called. All members voting aye, motion carried. The roll was called on the emergency clause with all members voting aye. The ordinance was given the number 900.

 

Mr. Ed Cherry, Jr. informed the Council of the importance of keeping the City buses in operation and asking their help in finding some means of doing so. The Mayor suggested a later meeting to discuss the situation and see if something could be worked out.

 

Nominations were made for Councilman to replace David Taylor. Those nominated were: Bud Davis, Mary R. Brown and Baird Keister. Secret ballots were cast with the following results: Davis-2, Brown-3 and Keister-3. Ballots were cast for Brown and Keister with the following results: Keister-5, Brown-3. Mr. Powell then made the motion that Mr. Keister be accepted by acclamation. Mr. Hamilton seconded the motion. Roll was called. All voting aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Powell, that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. Roll was called. All voting aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hendrix offered the following resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO VACATE AND ABANDON AN ALLEY LOCATED IN BLOCK TWO OF THE WILSON’S FIRST ADDITION TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS

 

Mr. Snow made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the resolution be adopted as read. Roll was called. All voting aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1955:17.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion that Council adjourn until Monday night, June 27, 1955, at which time the City Transit situation will be studied and discussed. Mr. Copeland seconded the motion. All aye. Motion carried. Council adjourned.
