CITY COUNCIL MINUTES MAY 21, 1979

 

The Jonesboro City Council met in regular session, Monday May 21, 1979, at 7:30 p.m. Present: Mayor, City Attorney, Park, Sanderson, Hinson, Shelton, Bridger, Minx, Hannah, Stricklin, Province, Mays and Haggenmacher. Absent: City Clerk and Haigler.

 

The minutes of May 7, were approved as received on motion by Mr. Hannah, seconded by Mr. Stricklin. All council voted aye.

 

Mr. Jon Coleman addressed council concerning abandoning a portion of Main Street and a portion of Stroud Street in Marlo 3rd Addition, which has been re-platted in Marlo Acres 6th Addition. Mr. Park moved that a public hearing be scheduled for June 4 at 7:00 p.m. concerning this matter. Motion seconded by Mr. Stricklin. All voted aye.

 

Mr. Hannah moved that a public hearing be set for 6:30 p.m. on June 4, for an alley closing in Matthews Addition. Motion seconded by Mr. Stricklin. All voted aye.

 

On motion by Mr. Park, seconded by Mr. Haggenmacher, permission was granted for placing a mobile home at 117 N. Bridge. The only dissenting vote was cast by, Mr. Minx.

 

The following ordinance was on 2nd reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE ACCEPTING CERTAIN LANDS ANNEXED TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS BY ORDER OF THE COUNTY COURT OF CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, ARKANSAS; ASSIGNING SAID ANNEXED TERRITORY TO WARD 5; ZONING SAID ANNEXED TERRITORY COMMERCIAL (C-3); DECLARING AN EMERGENCY AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Park offered the following ordinance:

 

AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR CERTAIN TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES; TO PROVIDE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS THEREOF; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Hannah moved that the rules be suspended and the ordinance be placed on 2nd reading, seconded by Mr. Park. All voted aye. Mr. Hannah then moved that the rules be further suspended and the ordinance be placed on 3rd and final reading, seconded by Mr. Park. All voted aye. Mr. Stricklin then moved for the adoption of the ordinance including the emergency clause, seconded by Mr. Hannah. All voted aye and the ordinance was assigned #1685.

 

Mr. Sanderson offered the following ordinance:

 

AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR CERTAIN TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES; TO PROVIDE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATIONS THEREOF; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

On motion by Mr. Minx, seconded by Mr. Stricklin and unanimous vote of council, Mr. Charles Smith was appointed to the Forum Commission, seceding Major Lubotsky.

 

Mayor advised council that Joe Tomlinson is not interested in accepting the job with JURHA stating that he could not handle the added responsibilities.

 

Mr. Sanderson moved that the Mayor be authorized to negotiate with Dupont the purchase of land laying west of Dupont at $5000.00 an acre. The motion was seconded by Mr. Shelton, all voted aye.

 

The Mayor was authorized to advertise for bids on insulation for ceiling at City Hall to aid the air conditioning system.
