VI. OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
Wyatt stated that Angela Sparks with Craighead County Solid Waste will not be in attendance due to illness. She will be rescheduled to present at a later time. He introduced Beverly Parker with the “Keep Jonesboro Beautiful” committee. Parker stated that the commission is not where they would like to be in terms of beautification in Jonesboro. She stated that Covid has affected the committee’s goals for cleanup. She stated that the Keep Jonesboro Beautiful Committee and the SWMB Committee can work together. Trash has an impact on stormwater and drainage. Wyatt suggested heightening the awareness of the impact of trash by doing Public Service Announcements. Parker stated that it is a statewide problem. Alexander suggested educating the youth to not litter.
Wyatt questioned how much does trash compromises the flow of water. Light stated that a lot of the trash is called “floatables”. “Floatables” are a significate problem for Jonesboro. In Phase I cities, “floatables” have to be removed from the system. There are various ways to trap and remove these items. Light stated he is working with the Mayor’s office on the vac truck that was voted on at the last meeting.
Gillis stated that apartment buildings produce a lot of trash and it is not picked up often enough. The trash is overflowing. Light stated there is no code regarding dumpsters, therefore, there is nothing to enforce. Light stated there needs to be more signage regarding littering and where the trash goes. He suggested doing a sign program that names the streams and creeks and possible making it part of the nature system. He stated that there could possibly be a contest for the signage similar to the manhole cover contest the SWMB sponsored a few years ago. Light ask what resources the state has available. Parker stated unfortunately not a lot. Bryant suggested getting some interns to help educate the public.
Wyatt thank Beverly Parker for attending the meeting and stated he wants to invite Angela Sparks to the next meeting. Dooley stated there will be an Earth Day event cleaning roads around ASU. Parker stated there will be a clean-up event on Saturday on Woodsprings Road and another one on May 1st.
