Minutes for the City Council meeting on February 6, 1956

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas, met in regular session on the above named date in the City Hall at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Clerk, City Attorney and the following named Councilmen: Keister, Johnson, Fritz, Fields, Copeland, Stricklin, Powell and Hamilton. Absent: Hart.

 

Mr. Keister offered the following resolution:

 

RESOLUTION APPOINTING CITY WATER AND LIGHT JUDGES AND CLERKS FOR THE 1956 ELECTION

 

Mr. Keister then made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the resolution be adopted as read. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1956:01.

 

Mr. Powell made the motion, seconded by Mr. Johnson, that Eugene Anderson be granted a permit to build a warehouse subject to the approval of the building inspector. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried. Permit granted.

 

Mr. Hamilton offered the following resolution:

 

RESOLUTION NAMING PEOPLE NATIONAL BANK OF JONESBORO AS THE DEPOSITORY OF CITY FUNDS FOR 1956

 

Mr. Snow then made the motion, seconded by Mr. Copeland, that the resolution be adopted as read. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1956:02.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. Mr. Powell seconded the motion. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hamilton offered the following ordinance and it was read for the first time:

 

AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING THE REGISTRATION OF AND PROVIDING FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE TAX; REPEALING PRIOR ORDINANCES; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Copeland made the motion, seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. The ordinance was then read for the second time. Mr. Snow made the motion, seconded by Mr. Fields, that the rules be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the third and final time. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried. The ordinance was then read for the third and final time. Mr. Snow then made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the ordinance be adopted as read. Roll was called. All members voting aye, motion carried. The roll was called on the emergency clause with all members voting aye. The ordinance was then declared by the Mayor as adopted. The ordinance was given the number 912A.

 

Mr. Johnson made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the City Attorney be instructed to draw an ordinance for setting deadline for paying occupation tax February 16, and for other purposes. Roll was called. All members voting aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, there being no further business, that Council adjourn. Dr. Fritz seconded the motion. All aye. Council adjourned.
