CITY COUNCIL MINUTES, JULY 6, 1981

 

The Jonesboro City Council met in regular session, Monday, July 6, 1981, at 7:30 p.m. Present, Mayor, and all elected aldermen. Absent, City Attorney and City Clerk.

 

The minutes of June 15, were approved as mailed on motion by Mr. Park, second by Mr. Shelton.

 

The following ordinance was on 3rd reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE ACCEPTING CERTAIN LANDS ANNEXED TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS, BY ORDER OF THE COUNTY COURT OF CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, ARKANSAS ASSIGNING SAID ANNEXED LAND TO WARD 5; ZONING SAID ANNEXED TERRITORY RESIDENTIAL R-2; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Mr. Park moved for the adoption of the ordinance to include the emergency clause, second by Mr. Stricklin, all aye. The ordinance was given the number 1770.

 

The following ordinance was on 2nd reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDINANCE NO. 954, KNOWN AS THE ZONING ORDINANCE FOR THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS, PROVIDING FOR CHANGES IN ZONING BOUNDARIES AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES

 

Discussion was held on placing a mobile home at 527 W. Belt Street, with Mr. Park moving that permission be granted, seconded by Mr. Shelton. Voting aye: Park, Shelton, Hinson, Sanderson, Mays and Haggenmacher. Voting nay: Stricklin, Bridger, Minx, Hannah, Haigler, Province. The vote being 6 aye and 6 nay, Mayor Stallings voted aye and the motion passed.

 

Mayor announced that a group of councilmen had met with quorum court members to discuss a sales tax issue and he further recommended a proposal on a countywide basis for the one-cent sales tax. Mr. Hannah moved that council approve same, seconded by Ms. Haigler, all aye.

 

The following bids were reviewed for vehicle insurance:

 

General Ins.                                          $18,951.00

Freeze Ins.                     34,258.00

 

The low bid was approved on motion by Mr. Hannah, seconded by Mr. Province, and all council voting aye.

 

Mr. Bridger gave background information on the dispute concerning city doing its own engineering work and Mr. Cameron explained how the work on LaBaume Street was done. A majority of the Council expressed their continued support of the job Mr. Cameron has been doing for the City.

 

There being no further business, council adjourned.
