Minutes for the City Council meeting on September 15, 1969

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Ark. met in regular session in City Hall, Monday night, September 15, 1969, at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Attorney, City Clerk and the following named Councilmen: Pierce, Turner, Dr. Bowers, Young, Darling, Stricklin, Minx, Pardew, Bowers, Williams, Johnson and Knight.

 

Rev. Beasley gave the opening prayer.

 

RESOLUTION TO VACATE AND ABANDON PART OF AN ALLEY LOCATED IN BLOCK “F” OF THE ORIGINAL SURVEY OF THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS

 

The resolution was given the number 1969:18.

 

The following ordinance was read for the first time:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND SECTION 15-54 OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES BY PROVIDING TWENTY MPH SPEED ZONE IN CERTAIN RESIDENTIAL SECTIONS.

 

Mr. Darling moved with Mr. Bowers seconding the motion that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the second reading. All voted aye and the motion carried. Mr. Johnson moved with Mr. Pierce seconding the motion that the rule be further suspended and the ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. All aye and the motion carried. Mr. Darling then moved with Mr. Bowers seconding the motion that the ordinance be adopted. All aye and the motion carried. Motion by Knight, seconded by Pierce to adopt the Emergency Clause passed unanimously. The ordinance was given the number 1239.

 

Mr. George Turner tendered his resignation as Alderman from the 6th Ward, as he has moved out of the city limits. Mr. Pierce moved with Mr. Bowers seconding the motion that his resignation be accepted. All voted aye and the motion carried.

 

Mr. Knight moved with Mr. Pierce seconding the motion that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. All members voted aye and the motion carried.

 

Dr. Bowers offered the following ordinance for its first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING PARTS OF GREENWOOD, ROSEMOND, ROY AND FLOWERLAND STREETS AS ONE-WAY STREETS FOR CERTAIN HOURS DURING SCHOOL MONTHS; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

 

Dr. Bowers moved with Mr. Young seconding the motion that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the second reading. All aye and the motion carried. Dr. Bowers moved with Mr. Young seconding the motion that the rule be further suspended and the ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. All aye and the motion carried. Dr. Bowers then moved with Mr. Young seconding the motion that the ordinance be adopted. All voted aye and the motion carried. Motion by Knight, seconded by Pierce to adopt the Emergency Clause passed unanimously. The ordinance was given the number 1240.

 

Mr. Minx moved with Mr. Pardew seconding the motion that the City Attorney write Holiday Inn concerning their large neon sign that is located at the intersection of Union & Matthews and creates a traffic hazard. All voted aye and the motion carried.

 

Mr. Stricklin offered the following resolution and moved for its adoption with Mr. Bowers seconding the motion. All voted aye, except Mr. Turner who passed. Motion carried.

 

RESOLUTION EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO GEORGE TURNER FOR HIS SERVICE AS AN ALDERMAN TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO AND ITS CITIZENS

 

The resolution was given the number 1969:19.

 

There being no further business, Council voted unanimously to adjourn.
