Minutes for the City Council meeting on August 23, 1965

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Arkansas met in regular session at City Hall, Monday night, August 23, 1965, at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Attorney and the following named Councilmen: Sammons, Griffin, Wilson, Bridger, Darling, Stallings, Heern, Williams, Pardew, Mays, Ledbetter. Absent: Snow and City Clerk.
The Mayor left after opening the meeting and Mr. Mays was elected President Pro Tempore. He presided over the rest of the meeting.
The following ordinance was placed on its second reading:
AN ORDINANCE PROHIBITING PARKING ON PORTIONS OF MONROE, CHURCH, JACKSON, UNION, JEFFERSON AND EAST STREETS; PROVIDING PENALTIES FOR VIOLATION THEREOF; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
The following ordinance was placed on its second reading:
AN ORDINANCE TO EMPOWER THE CITY OF JONESBORO TO ORDER OWNERS OF REAL PROPERTY TO CUT WEEDS, REMOVE GARBAGE AND RUBBISH - AUTHORITY FOR CLEARANCE BY CITY UPON REFUSAL OF OWNER - COSTS.
Mr. Bridger moved with Mr. Pardew seconding the motion that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called and all members present voted aye. Motion carried. Mr. Bridger then moved with Mr. Ledbetter seconding the motion that the ordinance be adopted. On the roll call, all members present voted aye and the motion carried. Roll was called on the Emergency Clause and all present voted aye. The ordinance was given the number 1120.
The following resolution was offered by Mr. Sammons:
RESOLUTION TO PURCHASE PROPERTY FROM MARY O. SPURLOCK FOR WIDENING OF EAST STREET
Mr. Ledbetter made the motion, seconded by Mr. Williams that the resolution be adopted. On calling the roll, all present voted aye and the motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1965:20.
Mr. Heern offered the following ordinance for its first reading:
AN ORDINANCE CLOSING A PORTION OF TWO STREETS IN DUDLEY SUBDIVISION OF A PART OF BLOCKS B, C, D, E, F AND G OF DUDLEY’S FIRST ADDITION TO THE TOWN OF NETTLETON, ARKANSAS (NOW JONESBORO, ARKANSAS)
Mr. Sammons moved with Mr. Griffin seconding the motion that the rule be suspended and the ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All members voted aye and the motion carried. Mr. Sammons moved with Mr. Griffin seconding the motion that the rule be further suspended and the ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called and all present voted aye. Motion carried. Mr. Sammons then moved with Mr. Darling seconding the motion that the ordinance be adopted. All present voted aye on the roll call and the motion carried. The ordinance was given the number 1121.
Mr. Ledbetter made the motion, seconded by Mr. Darling that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. On calling the roll, all present voted aye and the motion carried.
Mr. Bill Johnson at the request of Mr. Heern gave Council a brief run down on the street work and a prediction for completion of the work for this year.
There being no further business, Council voted unanimously to adjourn.
