Minutes for the City Council meeting on May 20, 1957

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Ark. met in regular session at City Hall, Monday night, May 20, 1957, at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Atty., City Clerk and the following named Councilmen: Keister, Johnson, Fritz, Field, Copeland, Brickell, Snow, Hamilton and Hart. Absent: Mr. Stricklin.

 

Mr. Copeland made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that William Stuck be given a permit to build a drug store on the corner of Matthews and Cobb Streets. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Johnson made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hart, that Rachel Watkins be given a permit to build and operate a beauty shop at 609 Warner. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Field, that the Craighead Booster Club be given permission to solicit funds for 30 days on behalf of the Colored Little League Club. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

After Mr. Frank Sloan filed a petition to close a street in Ridgecrest Addition, Dr. Fritz offered the following Resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO VACATE AND ABANDON A STREET IN RIDGECREST ADDITION

 

The Street Committee recommended that the alley between Johnson and Pardew on Main St. not be closed and they further recommended that the alley be one-way from West to East. Mr. Snow made the motion, seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the petition to close said alley be denied. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1957:11.

 

Mr. Field made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hart, that at the Street Committee’s recommendation Mills Morris be allowed to move parking meter. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Keister offered the following Ordinance and placed it on the first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE ALLEY IN HALTOM’S ADDITION

 

Mr. Hart made the motion, seconded by Mr. Snow, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Brickell made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Hart made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the Ordinance be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Roll was called on the emergency clause. All aye. The ordinance was given the number 935.

 

Mr. Keister offered the following Ordinance and placed it on the first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE AND ABANDON CERTAIN STREETS AND ALLEYS IN BARRETT’S ADDITION, AMERICAN TRUST CO. ADDITION, AND COBB’S SURVEY OF THE SOUTHWEST QUARTER OF THE NORTHWEST QUARTER OF SECTION 18, TOWNSHIP 14 NORTH, RANGE 4 EAST IN THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS:

 

Mr. Brickell made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hart, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the Ordinance be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Roll was called on the emergency clause. All aye. The ordinance was given the number 936.

 

Mr. Johnson offered the following Ordinance and placed it on the first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE AND ABANDON A CERTAIN PORTION OF AN ALLEY IN BLOCK E OF GREGG’S SUBDIVISION OF LANE’S ADDITION TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Dr. Fritz, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Keister made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Hart made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the Ordinance be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Roll was called on the emergency clause. All aye. The ordinance was given the number 937.

 

Mr. Hamilton offered the following Resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO VACATE AND ABANDON AN ALLEY IN THE KITCHEN PLACE ADDITION

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hart, that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Field, that the Sanitation Committee and the Mayor study the entire garbage problem in regards to the purchase of new trucks, compulsory garbage, charges to me made, etc.; and give a recommendation to the Council. Roll was called. Keister, Johnson, Fritz, Field, Copeland, Brickell, Hamilton and Hart voted aye. Mr. Snow voted no. Motion carried.

 

There being no further business Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hart, that Council adjourn. All aye.
