HUMANE SOCIETY

Dr. Wang of the NEA Humane Society addressed committee members about assistance in obtaining a right of way for a sewer easement.  He explained the sewer was less than satisfactory at the animal shelter located east of Commerce Drive on Highland Drive, and negotiations to obtain right of way had failed.  Mr. Glenn Batten and Mr. Claude Martin were asked to make a determination on the footage for the right of way making sure no one had built into a dedicated easement.  Chairman Moore offered to meet with representatives of City Water and Light regarding this matter.   A proposal was suggested that since the city is contemplating building a new animal shelter, they purchase land from the Humane Society.  Ms. Wannda Turner, Executive Director for a second group called Northeast Arkansans for Animals provided a second proposal suggesting a combined animal facility.   When asked why Northeast Arkansas for Animals does not purchase land from the NEA Humane Society, it was explained there were too many fundamental differences.  Mr. Jim Bowman , Director of Animal Control favored the proposal by Ms. Turner over that of the NEA Humane Society saying he did not want the animal shelter to be located in the industrial park because they would have the same problems they have now.

Councilman Perrin moved, seconded by Councilwoman Furr for adjournment.  All voted aye.
