Minutes for the City Council meeting on June 3, 1957

The City Council of the City of Jonesboro, Ark. met in regular session at City Hall June 3, 1957, at 7:30 p.m. There were present: Mayor, City Atty., City Clerk and the following named Councilmen: Keister, Johnson, Field, Copeland, Stricklin, Brickell, Snow, Hamilton and Hart. Absent: Dr. Fritz.

 

Mr. Snow offered the following Resolution:

 

RESOLUTION FOR SEWER SERVICE IN THE HAYES 2ND ADDITION

 

Mr. Copeland made the motion, seconded by Mr. Brickell, that the Resolution be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1957:13.

 

Mr. Hamilton offered the following Ordinance and placed it on the first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE A PORTION OF STREET IN RIDGECREST ADDITION IN THE CITY OF JONESBORO, ARKANSAS:

 

Mr. Snow made the motion, seconded by Mr. Brickell, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. Keister, Johnson, Field, Stricklin, Brickell, Snow, Hamilton and Hart voted aye. Copeland voted no. Motion carried. Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Brickell, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. Keister, Johnson, Field, Stricklin, Brickell, Snow, Hamilton and Hart voted aye. Copeland voted no. Motion carried. Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Johnson, that the Ordinance be adopted. Roll was called. Johnson, Field, Stricklin, Brickell, Snow and Hamilton voted aye. Keister, Copeland and Hart voted no. Motion carried. Roll was called on the emergency clause. Johnson, Field, Stricklin, Brickell, Snow and Hamilton voted aye. Keister, Copeland and Hart voted no. Motion carried. The ordinance was given the number 938.

 

Mr. Snow offered the following Ordinance and placed it on the first reading:

 

AN ORDINANCE TO VACATE AND ABANDON A CERTAIN PORTION OF AN ALLEY IN BLOCK 3 OF GREGG AND HOUGHTON’S SUB-DIVISION OF KITCHEN PLACE ADDITION TO THE CITY OF JONESBORO:

 

Mr. Snow made the motion, seconded by Mr. Keister, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the second reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Keister made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the rule be suspended and the Ordinance be placed on the third and final reading. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Mr. Keister made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the Ordinance be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. Roll was called on the emergency clause. All aye. Motion carried. The ordinance was given the number 939.

 

Mr. Johnson offered the following Resolution:

 

RESOLUTION TO ISSUE AIRPORT BONDS

 

Mr. Johnson made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the Resolution be adopted. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried. The resolution was given the number 1957:14.

 

Captola Bennett gave her report on the Colored Community Center.

 

After hearing the Police Committee’s recommendation, Mr. Hamilton made the motion, seconded by Mr. Brickell, that 48 pairs of pants at $16.00 per pair and 3 Police caps be purchased. The pants will be ordered from Mr. Himie Goldstein. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Mr. Keister made the motion, seconded by Mr. Brickell, that the Mayor be authorized to appoint a committee of such size as he deems best to work with other committees, to cooperate with taxed units regarding the appraisal of property and make their recommendation. Council voted unanimously on this motion and the Mayor appointed the Finance and Budget Committee to serve. They are Keister, Johnson and Fritz.

 

Mr. Stricklin made the motion, seconded by Mr. Hamilton, that the bills as okayed by the Finance Committee be paid. Roll was called. All aye. Motion carried.

 

Council adjourned on the motion of Mr. Hart seconded by Mr. Hamilton.
